I would like to welcome members of the internet to "Kyoto Shimbun's Home
Page". We, at Kyoto Shimbun, are also members of the internet and will be
providing information on the Kyoto and Shiga areas.
Kyoto, which has flourished as the ancient capital of Japan for around
1100 years since the days the Heian Period ( 806-1190), continues to
maintain its status as repository of Japanese culture in areas such as
the academia, arts and crafts, and religion among others. Here, deeply
rooted in the traditional industries, various state-of-the-art technology
industries flourish.
Meanwhile, Shiga Prefecture, which neighbors Kyoto, has within its
geographical boundaries, Japan's largest fresh water lake-Lake Biwa.
The prefecture is blessed with the abundant nature surrounding the lake
and is rich in historically famous natural features sceneries. It is,
moreover, in recent years, a leader of environmental issues. Kyoto and
Shiga, while inheriting a rich and diverse history and tradition, have
constantly lead the nation in various issues.
Kyoto Shimbun, ever since its establishment in 1879, has made Kyoto its
operational base and has continued with its news gathering activities
with pride. Today, through the internet, which holds promise of boundless
possibilities, we have the pleasure of meeting you, our new "readers".
In our role of "Information guide", we seek to serve you by providing
you with detailed up-to-the-minute information. We hope that you will
