The Kyoto Prefectural Police recently published 7,000 copies of a crime prevention handbook (photograph) in English and Chinese for foreigners visiting Kyoto. The free handbooks will be sent to tourist centers and crime prevention classrooms in prefectural police stations.
According to the Prefectural Police, many foreigners have been having trouble with crimes like bicycle theft and purse snatching, resulting in an increase in the number of people seeking advice from international exchange organizations. The handbook is based on the results of a questionnaire that asked foreigners in Kyoto what information they wanted to know about the Japanese police system. The 32 page handbook is B6-size, and includes information about precautions when using the 110 emergency telephone number, how to report an emergency from a public telephone, a list of telephone numbers for information offices such as a consultation room at the Prefectural Police Station, etc. The Prefectural Police are hoping that the handbook will help improve Kyoto's image as an international sightseeing city. |
