A New Golden Glow and Better Gold Flow!? "Money Shrine" Gate Receives a New Coat of Paint
The symbolic torii gate of Mikane Shrine in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, known as the "money shrine," has received a new coat of golden-colored paint. It glistens with a covering of lacquer developed by a long-established local metallic foil and powder manufacturer.
Three years ago, shrine officials had the color of the gate, approximately four meters in height, changed to gold after the shrine's name, Mikane, which literally means 'money.' Over time, however, the color had dulled due to the effects of automobile exhaust emissions and weather. Local gold leaf manufacturer, Hori Metal Leaf & Powder Co., Ltd, offered its services, saying, "If it's a golden gate you need, leave it to the gold professionals." They recoated the gate with a special enamel developed for use on Buddhist altars and fittings, and the exterior of temples and shrines.
In recent years, Mikane Shrine has become known as home to the god of money, and the number of worshippers who pray for financial fortune are on the increase. The special materials used on the gate not only give it the smooth, glossy finish of gold foil, but are also resistant to the effects of ultraviolet rays and grime, so this new exterior is expected to keep its luster for approximately 15 years. Masahiro Torii, the chief priest of the shrine, was delighted with the finished product, saying, "The new coat has been completed in a color that befits the name of this shrine perfectly."
