Jidai Matsuri and Heian Jingu Shrine in Meiji and Taisho Eras
Photo Exhibition at Bank of Kyoto's Central Branch

An exhibition of old photographs documenting "Jidai Matsuri," or the Festival of Ages, and Heian Jingu Shrine in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, started on October 3 at Bank of Kyoto's central branch in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto =Photo. The photographs depict the way the festival was performed and the customs of people in the Meiji Era.

The 19 photographs are owned by Heian Jingu Shrine. Subjects of the photographs include the reproduction of Nobunaga Oda's procession to Kyoto, which is said to have been performed one year in either the late Meiji or early Taisho Era, and the costumes of Hideyoshi Toyotomi's procession to Kyoto, which were newly made in the early Showa Era. Each photograph reflects the times, including one of an onlooker who had her hair dressed in traditional Japanese style in a photograph of the first Jidai Matsuri which took place in 1895.

"We hope residents who have supported the festival and shrine come to see the pictures," the shrine staff said. The exhibition will continue on weekdays until October 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
