Emergence of "Gozan Okuribi" Bonfire on Postcards
Support Group's Production Now on Sale

Postcards printed with images of "Gozan Okuribi", a traditional late-summer Kyoto ceremony, are now on sale. The postcards are produced by "Daimonji Gozan Okuribi Kyosan Kai," or Daimonji Gozan Okuribi support group. Images of the Chinese characters for "Dai" and "Myo-Ho" illuminating the night sky emerge on the cards.

The "Gozan Okuribi" bonfire is an annual religious rite held on August 16 to send off the spirits of ancestors who returned to their families during the Bon festival. A local preservation group based at the foot of the "Gozan" mountains has handed down the traditional bonfire. Proceeds from the postcards are used for the rite's expenses.

This year's original picture was drawn by Yukikazu Kawamata, a Japanese-style painter living in Kyoto City. Ten thousand sets of five postcards are produced, which are available for 200 yen per set. Folding fans with the same design have also been prepared for 2,000 yen each. These items can be bought at Kyoto City Tourist Information Office on the second floor of JR Kyoto Station Building and other locations.
