Night Parade of 100 Demons in Higashiyama
Paintings from Kodaiji Temple Exhibited

"Hyakki Yako Ten," or an exhibition featuring the night parade of 100 demons, is being held at Kita-shoin of Kodaiji Temple and the main hall of its sub-temple, Entoku-in Temple. On display are 11 items owned by Kodaiji Temple including "Hyakki Yako Emaki," or a picture scroll depicting the night parade, and "Jigoku Gokuraku Ezu," or a painting of heaven and hell.

Held annually at this time, this is the fourth exhibition. "Hyakki Yako Emaki" is believed to have been painted in the mid-Edo Period. Depicting discarded brooms and umbrellas marching in a town at night to get revenge, the picture is interpreted as an appeal to the mind to carefully use things to make the most of them.

Keinin Magami, a priest at the temple, says, "I hope people will look at the pictures and reflect on their way of too casually replacing things with new ones." There is an admission fee. The exhibition will continue until August 31.
