Spectacular! 840 People March thru Ancient Capital
Gion Festival's Hanagasa Junko

The Gion Festival's "Hanagasa Junko" procession was held on the morning of July 24. Starting from Yasaka Shrine in Higashiayam Ward, Kyoto, women wearing "Hanagasa," or flower sunshades, and "Kodomo Mikoshi," or portable shrines carried by children, made a lively march through the downtown area of Kyoto, on Shijo-dori Street and other.

The Hanagasa procession has been held since 1966 when Yamahoko Junko's second festival on July 24 was integrated into the first festival on July 17. The procession began as an event to replace the second festival.

Led by seven Kodomo Mikoshi and followed by young women wearing white costumes and colorful Hanagasa sunshades, as well as gold and silver lion dancers, the procession of approximately 840 participants started from Yasaka Shrine at 10:00 a.m. With children's hearty cries of "Wasshoi," the procession walked through Kyoto's main streets, including Kawaramachi-dori, Oike-dori and Teramachi-dori, for about two hours.
