Meiji Period, British-Built Steam Engine Lifted At Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum in September
Before dawn on July 26, "Neilson," a British-built No. 1080 steam locomotive from the Meiji Period, was installed into the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto. The massive, 48 ton vehicle was lifted from its trailer by large scale crane and transferred to railway tracks. It was then towed into the engine house by a later locomotive from the Taisho Period.
The Neilson, built in 1901, is a typical engine of the Meiji Period, but it is now the only one of its kind. It was donated to the museum by Nittetsu Mining Co., Ltd. in Tokyo, who had previously had it in storage in Tochigi Prefecture.
The Neilson arrived on a trailer at a road close to the museum at a little after 1:30 a.m. It was lifted about two meters into the air by crane, and moved 30 meters onto the railroad tracks within the museum. A Taisho Period No. 8630 engine towed the locomotive into the sectoral train depot, as it cannot move under its own power.
It is the nineteenth locomotive in the museum's collection, and also the oldest. After repairs, it will go on public display from the middle of September.
