Enjoyable Stroll Tracing Imperial History Exhibition at Kyoto Imperial Palace
The annual autumn public viewing of the Kyoto Imperial Palace in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, began on November 1. To commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the present Emperor's enthronement, items used in accession ceremonies since the Taisho Period were featured. Visitors took pleasure in roaming and retracing the history of the Imperial Family.
In "Waiting Room," two large flags that flew in the Shishin-den ceremonial building's garden when Emperor Hirohito ascended to the throne were on public display for the first time. Both flags are 550cm by 90cm; "Nissho-toban" is characterized by a golden sun on red brocade, while "Gessho-toban" features a moon embroidered in silver on white brocade.
In addition, ceremonial items called "Igimono," such as long swords, bows and arrows, which were actually used in past accession ceremonies, are being exhibited. Also on display are hanging screens used in ceremonies held after the "Daijosai" festivals.
The display will run through November 10. This year visitors may view areas that are not usually open to the public, such as the "Kogogutsunegoten" building, located on the north side of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and the "Higyosha" building. It is open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is no admission fee, and no reservation is needed.
