"Kamishichiken no Dento to Tenjin-sama Konjyaku Shashin Ten," an exhibition featuring photographs of Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, and traditional events held in Kamishichiken, a geisha district, which has been associated with the shrine since the Muromachi Period, started on November 7 at the shrine.
Approximately 50 photographs of "Baikasai," or plum blossom festival, held annually in February, "Dai-kencha Sai," or grand tea dedication ceremony, and "Kitano Odori," or Kitano dance, both from the Showa Period, and "Maiko," or apprentice geisha, on their way to dance practice after visiting Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine are being exhibited. A panel of "Chanoyu-zu," or tea ceremony picture, owned by "Kamishichiken Kabukai," a geisha association, is also on display.
Sixteen "Geiko," or geisha, and Maiko visited the exhibition on this day. They gazed at the photographs while making comments such as, "What Beautiful Ladies," when they found old pictures of senior Geiko. The exhibition will continue until November 28. There is no admission fee.
