Geiko Elegantly Dance in Ozarae
Ponto-cho Kabu-kai

Prior to the Ponto-cho Kabu-kai's autumn dance performance titled "Suimekai," which will be held from October 15 to 18, the "Ozarae," or final rehearsal, was held at Ponto-cho Kaburenjo Theater, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, on October 13. Geiko, traditional Japanese entertainers, performed elegant dances, including classic masterpieces and prestigious musical works.

This traditional dance performance has continued since 1930 as an opportunity in which Geiko showcase their usual efforts. This year's opening performance is "Tokiwazu," a style of Joruri narrative music, titled "Kiku no Sakae," celebrating the nobility of chrysanthemums and national prosperity. Geiko unfolded the "O-cho Emaki," or a picture scroll of the dynasty, through their gorgeous dancing.

It moved to Kiyomoto's scene titled "Tama-ya," or soap bubble peddler, then to Ogie's scene titled "Benifude," or a brush for lipstick, both of which are Japanese classic dance performances. Following these was a scene titled "Unohana," or deutzia, by Kiyomoto, expressing the beauty of the four seasons along the Sumida River. The fifth scene was the "Nagauta" music scene "Tsuna Yakata," taken from warlord Watanabe no Tsuna's demon extermination. Geiko danced a total of five programs in the same order as the public performances. The performance level was checked by associated people, as well as dance masters.

Performances will start from 4:00 p.m. every day. There is an admission fee. For more information, contact the Ponto-cho Kabu-kai at 075-221-2025 (Japanese language inquiries only).
