Blooming Chrysanthemums Herald Autumn Exhibition Starts at Nijo Castle
A chrysanthemum exhibition started on October 17 at Nijo Castle in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto. Arrayed on either side of the Kara-mon gate, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property, 470 newly-blooming chrysanthemums herald the approach of autumn.
The exhibition is being held as a part of "Nijo-jo Oshiro Matsuri" or Nijo Castle Autumn Festa 2009, which is organized by Kyoto City and Kyoto City Tourist Association. Chrysanthemums which have been carefully raised by 13 members of "Kyoto Kikka Rengo Kai," or Kyoto chrysanthemum association, are placed on the show. They are displayed on a traditional "Yakata" structure made of Kitayama cedar.
Many visitors strolling in the castle grounds paused to gaze at the brightly-colored yellow, purple and white blooms, and enjoyed photographing them. A meeting to judge the flowers will be held in early November when the blossoms are expected to reach their peak. The exhibition will continue until November 15. It is necessary to pay an admission fee for Nijo Castle to see the show.
