Lively Blaze of "Aofudo" At Shoren-in Temple from September 18
On September 14, Shoren-in Temple in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, showed the Buddhist painting "Aofudo," a national treasure, to interested parties prior to its public exhibition from September 18 to December 20. Makoto Kasuya, an art history professor at Nara Women's University explained, "This is a monumental work which displays the high level of culture in the 11th Century."
"Fudo Myo-o," or God of Fire, with a wrathful expression is in the center of the painting, and blazing flames are lively depicted. The painting, which is 203 centimeters high and 148 centimeters wide, was moved to the inner sanctuary of the Shinden hall in order to unveil it to the public.
Professor Kasuya pointed out that Aofudo not only keeps the style of a religious painting, but also has a stable composition as well as meticulously ornate decorations which were depicted with excellent skill. He commented, "From the view point of its technique and artistic quality, it is one of masterpieces in Buddhist painting history."
Head Priest Jiko Higashifushimi said, "I hope, especially in these unsettled times, Aofudo supports people's sprits."
