Conveying World of Zen "Calendar of Zen Quotes"
The Institute for Zen Studies in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, an organization consisting of 14 Rinzai sects and the Obaku sect of Zen Buddhism, has published the 2011 "Zengo Calendar," or calendar of Zen quotes. Different paintings and quotes are printed for each month to convey the world and teachings of Zen.
The calendar includes Zen paintings by the late Sochu Suzuki (1921-1990), former chief priest of Ryutaku-ji Temple in Shizuoka Prefecture and master of the temple's special training center, along with Zen quotes and poems selected by the Institute for Zen Studies to help in understanding the paintings.
January's quote with a painting is "Ichi-fuji, Ni-taka, San-nasu, Manpuku, Manpuku," meaning "Mount Fuji is the first, a hawk is the second, and an eggplant is the third. You are very lucky to dream of these items on the first night of the year." The month's poem is "Yume-ni-made ranku-zuke-suru hito-no-yoyo," meaning "It is a pity that the human world applies rank even in a dream." The calendar is sold for 525 yen.
