First Return of Judgment of Dead Pictures
Exhibition at Mibu-dera Temple

"Enma Juo-zu," a series of pictures depicting the judgment of the dead in the afterlife, is on public display in "Bunkazai Tenkan Shitsu," or cultural assets exhibition room, of Mibu-dera Temple, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto. This is the first time the pictures have been brought back to the temple from Kyoto National Museum in Higashiyama Ward.

Enma Juo-zu is estimated to be from the Namboku-cho Period. Consisting of ten pictures all together, the painting of the Great Enma depicts a scene in which bad/malicious acts committed by the dead during their lives are reflected on a mirror and investigated.

Also displayed in the exhibition room is the crosier's head, an Important Cultural Property kept in Kyoto National Museum which was saved from the 1962 fire that destroyed the temple's principal image. The interior of the temple's main hall and the garden are also open to the public. They will all be open for viewing until March 22. There is a 600 yen admission fee.
