Steam Rises in Naked Dance At Hokaiji Temple, Hino
On January 14, the "Hadaka-Odori" naked dance, where men dressed only in loincloths valiantly crash into each other, was held at Hokaiji Temple in Hino, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto. In the chilly temple precincts, men and boys yelled out "Chorai, chorai" as they jostled against each other, praying for bountiful harvests and a safe year ahead.
As a Buddhist sermon was recited in the temple's Yakushido Hall, 16 local boys started things off by running onto the broad verandah of the Amidado Hall, a national treasure, clapping their hands above their heads and stamping their feet while repeatedly calling out "Chorai" heartily.
Next, 18 men entered, pouring well water over themselves to stir themselves up, with white steam rising from their bodies as they crashed into each other. Temple visitors cheered at the sight of this ceremony, which began in the mid-Edo Period.
