Enjoy Fushimi's Sake! University Students Publish English Booklet
Students from Ritsumeikan University published an information booklet in English, designed to familiarize foreigners with "Fushimi no Sake," or rice wine in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City. Including comments on tasting Fushimi's Japanese sake, they hope the "the appeal of Fushimi, which, unexpectedly, also isn't known by Japanese people, will be discovered."
The booklet introduces tourist spots around the brewery district in Fushimi Ward, including Teradaya Inn and "Jukkoku-bune," or old-fashioned wooden houseboats, and has maps. It includes descriptions of technical terms such as "Toji," or chief sake brewer, and "Sugitama," or maturity indicator of Japanese sake, as well as students' remarks such as Fushimi's sake is "easy to drink, and it suits women" and that "hot sake is recommended."
Eleven students from the College of Policy Science worked on this as one assignment for an English class. Project leader Yosuke Matsumoto, a junior, said, "In every aspect, sake in Fushimi has a different flavor. I hope people can enjoy the taste of Japanese sake while taking a stroll."
The booklet is being distributed at hotels and tourist information counters throughout the city. It is also available through the Ritsumeikan University web site.
