First Dream at Museum
"Hokusai no Fuji" Exhibition Starts

The exhibition "Hokusai no Fuji," or Mt. Fuji by Hokusai, sponsored by the Kyoto Shimbun Co., Ltd. opened on January 2 at the "Eki" KYOTO museum in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto.

Painter Hokusai Katsushika (1760-1849) captured the appearance of Mt. Fuji, which is alive in people's daily activities and myths, from every angle. A total of approximately 150 pictures, including Hokusai's most important works "Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji" and "One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji," in their entirety, as well as ukiyo-e prints by Kuniyoshi Utagawa and others, are being presented.

In addition to "South Wind, Clear Sky," also known as Red Fuji, in which the moment when the rising sun tints Mt. Fuji in summer is vividly captured, and "Great Wave off Kanagawa," in which the contrast between Mt. Fuji and a giant wave tossing about a small boat is depicted, well-preserved pictures that were recently discovered and other items are showcased in the venue. Visitors compared differences between printing conditions and looked for Mt. Fuji in pictures. The exhibition will continue until January 22. There is an admission fee.
