Picture of Buddha's Death and Disciples' Mourning
Displayed at Shinnyo-do

"Nehan-zu," or a picture of Buddha's death, is being publicly shown at Shinnyo-do, or Shinshogokuraku-ji Temple, in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto. Visitors gazed at the picture, in which disciples and animals in mourning around Buddha are represented.

Many temples in the city hold "Nehan-e," or a ritual on the anniversary of Buddha's death, in March. Shinnyo-do displays this Nehan-zu every March for the full month.

The picture is about 5 meters long by 4 meters wide and was made in 1709. Vividly depicted in the picture are 127 various creatures, including a whale with coral in its mouth and a monkey holding flowers. The exhibition continues until March 31. There is a 600 yen entrance fee.
