Nagahama Sangyo Corporation, a silk crepe manufacturer in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, has obtained rare "golden" silk cocoons from Bali Island in Indonesia. The firm intends to spin thread from the cocoons and develop "Silk of Gold."
The cocoons are 4 centimeters long, shaped like a peanut and have a golden color throughout. The people in Bali use the moth chrysalides as food, so they have no interest in the cocoons. The corporation has already produced broaches and other accessories on a trial basis, using the golden cocoons. Mieko Hayashi, an assistant manager of the corporation's Sales Department, said, "These cocoons have an appeal which domestic ones don't have. We want to make excellent fabrics from these cocoons." Hiroshi Akai, a visiting professor of entomology at Tokyo Agriculture University, introduced these cocoons to the corporation. Professor Akai, who is interested in the project, said that "using these cocoons for making textiles is an exiting effort and unique on an international level." |
