Shinkangyokan Museum in Kyoto -- Opening in July

As one event commemorating the 1200th anniversary of the Heian Capital, Kyoto City will open the Shinkangyokan, nicknamed "Miyakomesse", currently under construction in Okazaki, Sakyo Ward, in July 1996. The new facility combines the former Kangyokan and the former Hall of Traditional Industries, and is expected to serve as a base for the promotion of industry in Kyoto, a city centered around traditional industries.

The permanent facility will include the "Hall of Traditional Industries -- Fureaikan", with approximately 70 pieces of work from traditional Kyoto industries on display. Graphics, books and computers will also provide a systematic introduction to the characteristics, history, processes and people of production centers throughout Japan. The facility will also be equipped with space for live demonstrations and sales.

If plans to invite the World Crafts Council (WCC) are formalized, council headquarters will be located in the facility, along with the Japanese Design Museum.
