Kyoto City Children Send Replies to the U.S.

Letters and pictures by children in Kyoto describing the city.

Children from the cities of Kyoto in Japan and West Hollywood in the U.S. have begun exchanging letters and pictures. Approximately 120 kindergarten and elementary school students from the city of Kyoto have written letters in English or have drawn pictures introducing the Kyoto lifestyle.

The exchange got its start last November, when officials from West Hollywood participated in the "Kyoto International Forum for Healthy, Cultural Cities. The officials delivered letters of friendship from the children of West Hollywood and asked for children from Kyoto to reply.

Children from Meitoku Kindergarten (Sakyo Ward), Rakuo Elementary School (Shimogyo Ward) and Demizu Elementary School (Kamigyo Ward) in Kyoto have drawn pictures and written letters describing life in Kyoto, such as the way they like to play and the Gion Festival. Both of the elementary schools offer English lessons as an extracurricular activity, and some students have used their newly learned language skills to also write self-introductions in English. The letters and pictures were recently mailed to kindergartens and elementary schools in West Hollywood.
