The students of the Nagaoka Daiku Elementary School in Kyoto Prefecture, who have putting a great deal of effort into international exchange, have recently sent "reply cards" to the students at the Dean Park Elementary School in Edinburgh City, Lothian Prefecture, England. The cards are replies to the New Years Cards which they received from the elementary students in England. The children are enjoying international exchange, because with just one card they can share their feelings.
Kyoto Prefecture and Lothian Prefecture joined in a declaration of friendship and exchange two years ago. In October and November of last year, an Edinburgh photographer, who wanted the children of both prefectures to come to know each other through photographs, visited the Nagaoka Daiku Elementary School, bringing with him photographs taken by the children of the Dean Park Elementary School. He also gave photography instruction to 103 fifth graders at the Nagaoka Daiku Elementary School. Photographs taken by the students in Nagaoka were displayed at the Dean Park Elementary School. Exchange between the two schools has continued since then. The students used picture postcards, which introduce Nagaoka City's famous scenic areas, for their replies. After writing the name and address of the students in England and their own names in English, the children were free to chose what to write and they wrote greetings such as "Happy New Year," "My hobby is sports," "I would like to visit England some day," and "Please write back." |
