An event well suited for "Nishijin", the "Town of Handicrafts", the "Nishijin Rakuichi Rakuza Momoyama Culture Village," a market of hand-made goods and a flea market, was started last autumn by Myorenji Temple, the headquarters of the Honmon Hokke religion (located at Teranouchi-dori, Omiya Higashi-iru, Kamigyo Ward in Kyoto) in an effort to revitalize the local area. The temple is also inviting local artisans such as Nishijin textile manufacturers to open booths at the market to make this event even more lively and establish it as one of the city's major fairs.
The first market of hand-made goods, held in October, offered 40 booths featuring handicrafts, pottery, crafts and other hand-made products as well as booths from craftsmen working in Nishijin textiles. Manufacturers of kimono accessories, obis, and kimonos also displayed and sold their wares. The market grows in size each time it is held, with the total number of booths rising to 60 for the November market and 80 in December. The cost for setting up one booth at the market is \1000. Inquiries should be directed to the temple office at (075) 451-3527. |
